Sustainability

I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd., as a Stantec Consulting Ltd. affiliate company, has adopted a triple bottom line approach to our sustainable practice, embracing and acting upon our economic, environment and social responsibility. We manage our opportunities and risk to find solutions that meet the needs of the present and contribute to a sustainable future for future generations in all facets of our operations.

I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd. and our partners are carbon neutral companies, conducting annual audits of our facilities and practices, with offsets purchased to balance our carbon footprint. As a leading provider of archaeological solutions, we provide economically viable solutions to our clients that embrace and incorporate the principles of sustainability. It is the policy of our firm to promote its commitment to protecting the environment at the same time as providing excellent service. Our office is committed to promoting a culture in which all employees understand, share and promote this commitment. We are developing an environmental policy to reinforce our existing technical and operational guidelines to ensure that environmental requirements are fully integrated into our standard operating procedures and training.

Having our head office in Victoria, B.C. ensures a high level of environmental efficiency over the course of the study. This location is within a short distance of the Royal British Columbia Museum, Archives and Archaeology Branch, thus enabling staff to perform necessary research-based tasks while avoiding significant transportation related emissions to do so. Additionally, staff members live nearby these facilities, a convenience that our firm utilizes in order to reduce our project-related carbon footprint even further.

Our office recycles as much as possible and we compost organics for employee gardens. Printing is kept to a minimum, using double side sheeting wherever possible. We have abandoned our water cooler to a more efficient and sustainable water filtration system. Presently we are researching options for more fuel-efficient field vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and emissions as part of our sustainability policy. I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd is currently working toward further reducing our carbon footprint.

Feature Artifact

Decorated Sandstone
(Willows Beach, Oak Bay, B.C.)

This illustration displays a bifacially ground and incised zoomorphic sandstone object. The facial characteristics along with the shaping, through grinding, to depict a dorsal fin have rendered this artifact as
a fish representation. Zoomorphic fish effigies have been identified as showing strong associations with the Marpole culture type (2000 – 1100 B.P.).
