Feature Artifact

Bone Pendant
(Patricia Bay, North Saanich, B.C.)

This illustration displays a zoomorphic bone pendant depicting a form of amphibian. This artifact was recovered associated with a human burial, where it was situated directly below the cranium, implying it was worn around the neck. The circular pits drilled into the surface are suggestive of spots which could indicate the portrayal of a spotted toad, an animal revered on the Northwest Coast for the shamanistic value of its hallucinogenic secretions.
