Feature Artifacts

Fluted Points
(Pink Mountain, Northeastern B.C.) HhRr 1:19

These illustrations depict the basal portions of two fluted projectile points. Artifacts of this style are evidence of some of the earliest populations to occupy British Columbia, not to mention the majority of the Americas. Other similar artifacts have been recovered primarily from surface contexts in northeastern British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan with one specimen dated from the Charlie Lake Cave site near Fort St. John. These specimens were excavated from the Pink Mountain site (HhRr 1) in northeastern British Columbia.

Scottsbluff Point
(Pink Mountain, Northeastern B.C.) HhRr 1:20

The artifact illustrated is a large stemmed spear point exhibiting parallel flaking across both faces. The stemmed sides are straight and form a 90˚ angle with the narrow shoulders. An impact fracture is evident at the tip which conveys the utilization of this
specimen as a projectile. Scottsbluff style bifaces are identified as part of
the Cody complex (ca. 10,000 to
7,000 BP) identified primarily within
the Great Plains culture.
