First Nations Relations
I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd. are B.C. pioneers in making a concerted effort to consistently involve First Nations when conducting archaeological investigations. We consult with local First Nations at all stages of archaeological projects, as we have done as part of our core practice for nearly twenty years. First Nations have been involved on both large and small-scale archaeology projects. We offer training in field archaeology methods to our First Nations crew members, who are key members of our archaeological field crews. Additionally, I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd. engages local First Nations Spiritual Advisers on site for best practice guidance regarding the recovery of human remains from archaeological burial sites.
As key stakeholders, First Nations involvement provides specialist expertise, knowledge and interpretation relating to archaeological sites, traditional use and cultural practices as part of our approach in conducting archaeological projects. In our continuing commitment to seek out initiatives to engage with First Nations, we have signed Protocol Agreements with local groups to define collaborative best practice approaches as part of our ongoing consultations and are actively pursuing this practice.
I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd. has worked with over 100 First Nation communities in British Columbia, and we have been hired directly by over a dozen First Nations communities to conduct studies on their behalf, including field surveys, archaeological overviews as well as traditional use studies.
