Feature Artifact

Halibut Hook
(Old Songhees Reserve, Victoria, B.C.)

This artifact is a decorated wooden composite halibut hook of a style most commonly linked to groups from the northern Northwest Coast (Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian). The “seal eating a halibut” motif contains supernatural connotations and is representative of ideological beliefs; i.e. the success of the fishing expedition and the safe return of the fishermen. The body of this artifact is manufactured from wood, the shank portion is identified as yew or alder,
an iron nail is used as
the barb which is lashed
to the shank using
cherry bark.
